コラム 写経のしかた
日本の皆さんは写経をしていますか。
アメリカで信者の多いキリスト教では経典を写すという修行はありません。また、アメリカの書道はカリグラフィと言われますが、最近はパソコンが主流でカリグラフィを書ける人もほとんどいません。
そんな逆境の中でもアメリカの仏教徒は写経をしています。といっても、相当に慣れた人なら法華経の写経をしますが、漢字が難しいので、米国では写仏をする事が多いです。写仏といっても絵柄は複雑で集中力を要します。そして子供はクレヨンでお釈迦様のぬり絵をし、最後にみんなで御宝前にお供えします。
アメリカでは写経は一般になじみが薄く、ハードルが高いですが、大変功徳がある修行なので頑張って広げていきたいと考えています。
How are your skills using fude when doing shakyo? In America we do not have fude but special pens to write in calligraphy. Lately this skill has been lost as the younger generation moves towards smartphones and computers.
We do shakyo in America using fude. Those who are advanced do copy sections of the Lotus Sutra. For beginners, instead of copying kanji, I have them trace images of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas. These pictures are very intricate and require concentration. For children, I have them color with crayons printed images of the Buddha. When finished, I display everyone’s picture as offering to the gohonzon around the altar.
Using fude takes many years of practice. So in order to still gain merits, I start with image copying, then eventually move on to shakyo when they are ready.
