日本にいると「アメリカのお経ってどんなの？」とよく聞かれます。
まず最も大切なお題目は日本語で「南無妙法蓮華経」と唱えます。他のお経を唱えるときは、ローマ字表記の真読で読んだり英訳したものを読んだりします。英訳したお経は、日本での訓読にあたります。ですが日本の訓読よりも意味は理解しやすいと思います。
あなたは日本語の訓読のお経の意味がすぐに理解できますか？私は難しいです。ご信者様にとっても意味が理解できるからこそ、お釈迦様が説かれたことが、より深い実感をもって、理解できるのではないでしょうか。
とはいえ、真読でお経を読むことも強く勧めています。アメリカのご信者様が団参で日本に来たときは、是非一緒にお経をあげましょう。
Many people have asked me, “how do Americans chant?” This is an interesting question as it takes time to explain in detail. So here is the quick version.
The most important phrase, Odaimoku is chanted in Japanese. Namu myoho renge kyo is the same. As for sutra chanting, sometimes shindoku is used (in romaji) and other times in English. This is just like chanting in kundoku, but the difference is that English is easier to understand the meaning. How many of you can understand the Lotus Sutra by chanting in Kundoku? I believe it is in old Japanese style so very difficult to comprehend. Because of the easiness to understand, the followers have a greater realization as to what the Buddha is trying to teach.
I still stress chanting in shindoku, so that when the followers come to Japan on pilgrimage, they can chant with you.
