先日、甲種試験を受けるために身延山大学に行きました。この試験は日蓮宗の大学を出ていないお坊さんの為にあり、大学レベルの難しい仏教の講習があります。

　私は僧侶なので仏教の考え方や歴史は知っていますが、最も苦労したことの一つは日本の仏教用語でした。

　英語の仏教用語はサンスクリット語の単語をそのまま使う事が多いのですが、日本ではそれが漢字になっているのです。意味を理解するためには、漢字をサンスクリット語に置き換え、それを英語に訳す必要があったのです。

　とはいえ、アメリカで日蓮宗の布教をするには、サンスクリット語と日本語を理解しそれを英語でわかりやすく説明しないといけません。大変な事ですが、日々精進していきたいと思います。

A couple of weeks ago, I went to Minobusan University to study then take the Koshu test. This test is for those priests who did not graduate either from Rissho or Minobusan University. The prep classes are difficult as it is college level Buddhism and a one year class is taught in five hours.

For me, I know some concepts and history but for others, I never heard such terms. In English, Sanskrit is used often. In Japanese, they use many Chinese terms. I have to translate both from Chinese into Sanskrit in order to understand what type of terms are being used.

I hope I pass some of the portions of the test (there are seven parts). As for the rest, I will have to create a dictionary of terms in Japanese, English and Sanskrit so I can pass the other parts next year.
